Community Update: Children Safety Signs at the March HOA Meeting

Admin Apr 23, 2026

At the March 2026 Lake Griffin Estates HOA meeting, residents received an important update that could directly impact how child safety signage is viewed within the community. During the Management Liaison report, the board discussed a homeowner-installed “children playing” sign that had been attached to an existing speed limit sign, and the outcome may surprise many homeowners.

A Rare Show of Support for Resident Safety Efforts

In a community where modifications to HOA property are often closely monitored, the board chose to take a practical and supportive approach.

According to the March meeting discussion:

  • The board officially approved the sign remaining in place
  • Members reviewed the situation and agreed the sign posed no issue
  • No violation notice was issued
  • The approval was documented as part of the meeting discussion

This decision signals that when it comes to neighborhood safety, especially protecting children in high-traffic areas, the board may be willing to recognize reasonable resident-led efforts.

Why This Matters to Homeowners

Many residents have recently received notices regarding temporary signs placed near their homes, including “children playing” signs meant to encourage drivers to slow down.

This March approval creates an important point of reference.

If a resident-installed safety sign attached directly to an HOA-owned speed limit sign was allowed to remain, it raises reasonable questions about how similar safety-related signs are being enforced elsewhere in the neighborhood.

For homeowners who have received violations tied to child safety signage, this documented board approval may provide useful context when responding to management or requesting clarification on enforcement consistency.

The Bigger Issue: Traffic Enforcement Limitations

This discussion becomes even more important when viewed alongside another major concern raised during recent meetings, the condition and legality of community traffic signs.

The board acknowledged that many existing traffic signs within Lake Griffin Estates are not compliant with Florida Department of Transportation standards. Current concerns include:

  • Speed limit signs that may be undersized
  • Missing required reflective backing or certification markers
  • Limited ability for law enforcement to issue citations

Because of these deficiencies, law enforcement presence within the neighborhood is currently focused on visibility and deterrence rather than active ticket enforcement.

In short, residents may currently play a larger role in encouraging safe driving behavior than official enforcement can.

A Community Conversation Worth Having

Safety is one of the few issues that impacts every resident equally. Whether you have children, grandchildren, pets, or simply want calmer streets, slowing traffic benefits everyone.

The March meeting showed that resident concerns are being heard, at least in some situations, and it reinforces why staying informed and participating in HOA meetings matters.

What Happens Next?

The board is reportedly exploring what would be required to bring community signage into compliance so traffic rules can be more effectively enforced.

Residents are encouraged to stay engaged and attend upcoming meetings to ask questions, share concerns, and advocate for safer streets.

The next HOA board meeting is scheduled for May 7th at 5:30 PM.

Community awareness starts with participation. Staying informed is one of the strongest tools homeowners have.
